oh Friedrich where will we go....
When the austrian Newspaper 'Der Standard' is sued for defamation by members of a certain orange, and in time of the beginning of the years long process blue party, austrian courts claimed them guilty. Political influence of this party is not going as far as into the judicial process but into policy groups dealing with the subject itself. After going through all appeal possibilities until the European Court in Strassbourg, the newspaper was acquitted. Besides of an article in the newspaper itself this was unnoticed by the public. The freedom of trought and expression is restricted in terms of political presence of concerned people, but I dare say this is nowhere as generally accepted than in this mountain bordered country. Through long time the division of society on all levels in the main parties black/red was established and is deeply rooted in our culture. Maintaining reputation is more important than political programs, or fair reports to inform the public, or at least people who are reading newspaper and informing themselves. It is a sign of democratic poverty that a european institution in a community where we are ought to be precursors and active forming parts has to ensure rights that are not beeing uphelt by our own legal system. The disinterest and lack of exclamations and comments of austrian public is disignative for worrying developments, specially seen in the light of international events as discrimination and dead because of a funny Danish newspaper etc.
So which one is calling? New Zealand with it's 'Lord of the Rings landscape', or Canada as the 'better america'? I hope to be able to take more than 100ml Kernöl *addicted* with me to the escape route!
